Hellboy: Pancakes

Bringing Mike Mignola's Hellboy comic "Pancakes" to life was the culmination of a lifelong dream. I had read the two-page comic many years ago, and it became a story that was very close to my heart. The comic stands to me as one of the most endearing (and hilarious) looks at nature vs nurture and speaks to the power of adoption.
We mocked up a variety of different styles ranging from photoreal to completely flat shaded, all before arriving at the final style: A hybrid of the hand drawn inked comic feel combined with the more dimensional look of a full 3D render.
